Corns & Callous
A callous is a thickening of the outer layer of skin that occurs when extra pressure or friction is placed on a particular area of the foot (ie. from tight fitting footwear or due to you having a high arch or flat foot type. This extra build-up of skin is our body’s way of protecting underlying tissues.
Callous commonly occurs across the ball of the foot, under the big toe and on the tips of the toes and can become uncomfortable. Callous can be painful on direct pressure, especially in shoes and can create a burning sensation in the area.
Corns are a more focal area of hard thick skin and develop in areas of higher pressure. They usually have a deep, central core.
If not treated, both callous and corns can become quite painful. Treatment involves taking out the central core of a corn and/or debriding the dead callous away. At Active Podiatry, we can assist in debriding the callous and removing the corns. We can also offer advice on footwear features to look for to avoid the re-occurrence of corns and callous or orthotics to help redistribute pressure away from painful corns & callous.
Regular treatment is often required when the cause of the corns and callous is due to foot deformity (high arch/flat foot) rather than outside influences such as footwear.
Corn pads containing acid are not advisable and should NEVER be used by diabetics and those with diminished circulation. We find they are rarely successuful and that you money is better spent on a podiatry appointment!
