SHOCKWAVE THERAPY (EXTRACORPOREAL)
Active Podiatry now offers Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT). This technology uses high intensity sound waves that transfers energy into the chronic injured tissue. Shockwave therapy promotes faster healing of tendon and fascia by improving blood supply to the injured region. This pro-inflammatory treatment leads to long term healing & regeneration of the chronic injured tissue.
Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy is usually recommended for chronic conditions (>6-weeks) or when other conservative treatments have only been partially effective. Once an injury becomes chronic, the body often finds it difficult to heal the injury in a timely fashion. Shockwave takes the injured tissue from a chronic state, back to an acute phase so the body can then begin the healing process.
At Active Podiatry we find Shockwave Therapy works best when combined with a comprehensive rehabilitation program. We do expect our clients to carry out specific strengthening exercises.
Usually 1-6 treatments are required, and these treatments are usually spaced 7- days apart. They are non-invasive and there is often immediate relief, with full benefit 6-8 weeks following the final treatment.
