Patellofemoral syndrome
This can occur when the patella (knee cap) does not move or track correctly during walking or running.
Symptoms include aching, pain or tenderness in the knee particularly when walking up or down hill.
There are a number of causes of patellofemoral syndrome but muscle imbalance or a pronated foot type (flat feet) can increase your risk of developing this condition.
Treatment often includes orthotics and advice on appropriate sporting footwear, aiming at improving foot and lower limb function by way of corrective abnormal or poor biomechanics. At Active Podiatry we use our new video gait analysis technology to determine your need for foot orthotics (soft or hard) by way or walking or running gait analysis and will also refer on to a sports physiotherapist to help improve quadricep muscle strength and function if this is an issue.
