Ingrown Toenails
Ingrown toenails are a common, painful condition that occur when when the nail embeds (grows) into the skin.
There are several different ways an ingrown toenail can arise, including trauma (ie. dropping something on the toe, wearing shoes that are too tight), incorrect cutting of the nails or sometimes it may just be due to the rounded or excessive curved shape of your toenail.
If there is inflammation, swelling and pain present, the majority of the time the ingrown nail won’t resolve without professional podiatric treatment. At Active Podiatry we are able to help remove problematic ingrown toenails and offer advice on how to keep the area clean and dressed. Infected toenails may require a course of antibiotics from your GP.
Sometimes chronic ingrown toenails may require a small relatively painfree surgical procedure. To do this we must first numb your toe with a local anaesthetic injection. The ingrown portion of nail is removed and a chemical known as phenol is used to sterilise where the nail grows from so that piece of nail will never grow back.
All podiatrists at Active Podiatry are trained to perform this procedure.
Please call us today to arrange and appointment or if you would like to discuss your ingrown toenail further.
